With courage, they sought a new place where they could forge a life, raise their families and worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience. They worked hard for their sustenance as well as for the benefit of their communities. They were not looking for a hand out. Lady Liberty invited the tired and the poor and they came willingly to our shores. Others came by force, as slaves, an appalling injustice and blight on our nation’s history. Freedom has forever been the desire of every human heart. It does not matter the color of the body that heart resides in – black, white, yellow, red. Every human wants freedom of choice. There are many circumstances that enslave us – our own unwise choices but more frequently the deliberate decisions of power hungry tyrants who use the often ill gotten resources of the world, including its people, to fulfill their dastardly long term goals. The consequences of low men in high places may result in poverty, bogus wars, disillusionment, drug addiction, famine, ethnic cleansing, etc. Regrettably, even in this free land, there were and still are instances of religious and ethnic intolerance frequently tolerated and promoted by self serving men in our own government. Sometimes, we do not venture to question the credibility of the allegations. Racial intolerance leads to bitterness, hatred and violence. Intolerance is most often the result of ignorance. Were we to walk in another’s shoes, we might be more understanding and compassionate. Our constitution discourages religious or racial intolerance. It promotes a higher standard of behavior and equality among the citizens of this great land. It is man that perpetuates hatred and bigotry both verbally and physically. The supreme law of the land and the scriptures are not always followed by those who profess belief in them. These two existing standards, both inspired, are the ideal – something to work towards. They give a pattern or model for our lives and measure us as individuals. If we purport to love, honor and uphold the Constitution and its lofty principles as a document worth saving let us make every attempt to embrace and practice those principles that we so eloquently talk about. Otherwise we would appear hypocritical and lack the credibility of our convictions while claiming to have an alternative plan of action. Generally, civility has been lost. Crassness, vulgarity and rudeness are all too common. The “me first” mentality really means: me first and you last. Putting your own needs above anyone else is the current and often promoted media trend. If we are to be successful, we must be a unified cohesive group. While one person can surely make a small ripple only a strong unified group can change the current stream of events before it reaches the dangerous rapids of destruction. We cannot expect the blessings of Heaven if we trample and bash others in the process of our otherwise gallant efforts. We are on the same side and fighting against the identical enemy. Let’s not make enemies of each other in our fervor to correct the wrongs that we see in our political system. Constitutionalists are a unique breed of people. We have the courage to walk a different path rather than follow the beleaguered, brainwashed crowd. We come from various backgrounds, religions and races. We may be Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Baptists, Methodists, Evangelical, Episcopalians or Muslims. Most groups have been government targets at one time or another. Or we might not be affiliated with any religion which is fine. Our commonality resides in our love of constitutional freedom. We have a giant task ahead that needs individuals who respect and honor each other with civility.
I read the following poem in the
Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem when I was there in 1999:
When the Nazis came for the communists, I
did not speak out because I was not a communist. When they came for the
trade unionists, I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Catholics, I did not speak out because I was a
not a Catholic. When they came for the Jews, I did not speak out because
I was a not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to
speak for me. (Just add your particular group here - Mormon, etc)
We claim to be a party
that embraces constitutional values - if this is true - we must embrace
those values for all. Most religious groups, except the
New World Order religion are or will be
vilified by government propaganda. We, of all people, should not castigate
others for their religion. We should be the last people to dislike a
particular group because of government encouragement. To hate others
because of media propaganda is unthinkable. Most of us come from one of the major parties where we had only a vague idea of what the platform included. And if there were visible goals, elevated aspirations and implied or verbal promises they were trashed immediately after the election. The pro-life stance has been a part of the republican party for decades. It gets votes in each election but never any action, just rhetoric. They will retain it rather than ever take action because it helps to retain party loyalty. I am sure this is true for the democrat party as well with their vocal concern for the poor who yet remain poor even after millions of dollars have been spent on the bogus war on poverty. Both parties utilize the rhetoric that sells and seduces the voters while all become enslaved by big government. Divisiveness divides. Contention creates chaos. Surely we do have differences which should be celebrated. Let us focus on our commonalities: a love of freedom, a disdain for slick politicians and great respect and honor for the wonderful document whose principles we are trying to restore. © Deanna Spingola 2005 - All rights reserved Deanna Spingola's articles are copyrighted but may be republished, reposted, or emailed.
