TALIAFERRO/TOLIVER TIMES Volume I, January 5, 1999 Issue 49 SALUTATIONS
Greetings and best wishes for the New Year, Taliaferros and Tolivers everywhere.
We're just about to wind down this combined effort of ours that extended for two
years. It was a great run and all of us know more now than we did when we began in
November 1996. This is the next to last issue of TALIAFERRO/TOLIVER TIMES.
NEW MEMBERS
DEBI LEHMAN (jlehman@mci2000.com) knows us well because she's read all of our early work.
Here, she tells us about her family and hopes - as we all do - that she will
find some new cousins. Debi ran into a problem with the old web site that we hope
she can escape by clicking onto the new site. She tells us of Samuel of
Charlottesville. At one time I had a bunch of research about him. If I can
find it, Debi, I'll send it to you. He turned out not to be my Taliaferro, so I it may
have disappeared.
**** I have just down loaded all the 15 zip files and read through them. Whew! I would have loved to just open each back issue online but when I click on them, it says file note found on this server. I am sure there isn't anything wrong with your web site; but would really like to have a look at the last three issues you have listed that are Not in zip file format. Or is there another web site set up that I could got to and view these files?
I am married to a decedent of Taliaferro. As a matter of fact the maiden name of my husband's mother was Taliaferro. But of course none of your issues have even come close to the lineage I have. My husbands mother and forefathers documented only to a Samuel Taliaferro of Charlottesville VA.b. 1727.1798 married to a Annie ?? 1749 born to the couple was one son {an only child} Francis Taliaferro b.3/12/1750 d.2/18/1826 married Letitia Hughes four children born to them:
Samuel Walker Taliaferro b.7/19/1798 d.10/11/1879 married Sally McClung, Leroy Taliaferro, twin girls, Nancy and Sally. They moved to Kentucky when Samuel was about 15 years old.
My Mother-in-Law compiled a book on this called the Toliver Twist by Sally Taliaferro Lehman. She gave each of her children and grandchildren a copy. She has since passed away. I am not for sure if there is a copy published anywhere. In the beginning of the book she mentions that her father and his father before him told how the family is related to the Robert Taliaferro; but we have been fruitless in finding anything to connect the family's history. My Mother-in-law was born in Peoria, Illinois.
Don't know if you can tell me anything. I was doing genealogy on my own side when I ran across a Robert Taliaferro that married a Matthews/Mathews which happens to be my maiden name. So naturally I had to get side tracked and look into it further.
Isn't it funny how some surnames just cross like that?
[JB Comment: I first came across common ancestors in my husband's and my family; but neither of us was born more than 250 miles from Jamestown, so that wasn't too surprising. However, in the three years I've been compiling two family newsletters, I have been amazed by the number of times I'll hear from a descendant who mentions the family name of a spouse; and that family name is one that was marrying into the Taliaferro or Moore family a couple of centuries ago. That, I believe, is nothing short of phenomenal even when you take into consideration that families migrated together, so might be friends with the same families six or seven migrations later. But after all, moving and separation from the old family is almost an icon of the 20th century. It's amazing that it's still happening.]

LINDA D. PADGETT (LPadgette@aol.com) writes in frustration, having recently discovered her Taliaferro line. She is well now acquainted with "the brick wall." Please contact her if you can provide some help. Linda, your line doesn't seem to yet be as far back as the 4th generation; but when you get it there, don't be discouraged if you can't ferret out the right line. Very few of us can because of massive record losses in their home counties - Caroline and King & Queen.
****My oldest son found your "Taliaferro Times" online and got all excited that you live so close to me.
My grandmother came from the Taliaferro line (her name was Susan Courtney Taliaferro Greer (and she married a McCormick). Her father was Thomas Bailey Greer.
I am not sure why my son wanted me to contact you, but this is the contact. I found your files tonight, and am reading them in turn. You seem to have gathered quite a bit of information. I use the information I gather through genealogy as a history lesson. Unfortunately I have found some of the history lessons to be false rumors that lead me straight into brick walls. I am sure you have found those walls yourself.

MARY PERKINSON (perky@iquest.net) is snowed in about now. Hope you'll contact her if you can help because maybe she has some down time now to devote to Taliaferro treasures. All of you Tolivers, tell Mary you're cousins! We can confirm through our TTT work that Charles Taliaferro of Surry Co NC was not the ancestor of the Wilkes Co Tolivers. Here, incidentally, is another case of common surnames two centuries and hundreds of miles away from the home county. There were Baldwins and Reynolds in Surry/Wilkes Co NC before 1800 as well as Tolivers.
****Thank you for adding my name to your list of subscribers. My line is very sketchy and I hope someone out there can help me.
My line is:
1. Sarah E Baldwin b: 1847 Lawrence Co IN, daughter of David Baldwin and Sarah Stephens d: 1910 Orange Co IN. Mar: Daniel Reynolds in 1866 in Lawrence Co IN (these are my gr-gr-grandparents.)
2. David Baldwin b: 1817 NC, son of Theophilus Baldwin and Sarah Maxwell; d: about 1900 Lawrence Co IN. Mar: Sarah Stephens in 1846 in Lawrence Co IN
3. Sarah Maxwell b: ????; d: ???? Lawrence Co IN. Mar: Theophilus Baldwin, probably in Wilkes Co NC
4. Lucy Toliver - b: 1766; d: 1832. Mar: William Maxwell
Among other things, I need the parents of Lucy Toliver. Correspondence I've received has said she was the daughter of Charles Taliaferro b: 1690 d: 1726 and Ann Kemp b: 1694. This can't be possible, as Lucy wasn't born until 1766. May she's be a granddaughter, but haven't been able to find her parents. She had brothers Charles, Moses, Jesse that I know of.
I have lots of Taliaferro information, but can't find her in any of it. Be glad to share all I have.
[JB Comment: As we've learned through TTT, there was a Charles Taliaferro in Surry Co NC (next to Wilkes) in the late 1700s; but we also learned that he isn't the ancestor of the Tolivers of Wilkes Co. Charles was the son of Dr. John Taliaferro who moved to the area from Orange Co VA. Recently, while researching another family in Orange County, I ran across Toliver, or similar spelling in the tax lists in the Orange Co VA of about 1760/70. I also found a TOLIVER Bed and Breakfast there - wanted to stop by for lunch, but schedule and traveling companions just didn't allow for it this trip. Maybe you Tolivers need to check out Orange County to see if that's where your Wilkes Co Toliver family came from. Many of my families, for instance, were in the neighboring counties of Orange and Albemarle Cos VA just before they moved to the area of Surry/Wilkes Co NC before the 1800s. There must have been a motivating occurance.]

JOE MINER (j.miner@worldnet.att.net) here's a reminder for everyone that our new web site address is: << http://www.spingola.com/TaliaferroTimes/TT.htm >> It's not quite complete yet, but should be by the the beginning of February. Hope you won't receive "No File Found" at this address. If you do, it's momentary, so try again later.
*****Please add me to the distribution of your times. My GGGG Grandmother was either Elizabeth Taliaferro or Mary Taliaferro daughters of Richard T. and Rose Berryman. I am trying to determine which one married Thomas William Wortham. The Wortham tree says Elizabeth and the Taliaferro tree I saw says Mary.
I tried to read your back issues and only received NO File Found. If it is working that sometimes happens when there is an independent phone company somewhere in the loop.

VANESSA PFEFFER (dvaspfeffer@juno.com) had just gotten started when, sadly, she lost her source, her Mother. All of you Tolivers, please welcome Vanessa to your group and offer help in identifying her family.
*****Following is my information, at present. It took me a while because, the day after I "subscribed", my closest Tolliver went into the hospital. She died 15 days later.
I haven't been back to genealogy since then...just too much to do with my mom's "estate." I was able to tell her I thought I had found her grandfather's line - which had eluded her mother - just from reading the first TTT I received. I'll be excited if I can find some way to connect it back to Robert.
My Toliver/Tolliver line has been a problem to trace due to my ggrandfather being a "black sheep."
>From a death certificate--
1.Enoch Toliver m. Liz Prickett. Their son is the "black sheep."
2. Joshua Finley Toliver
b. 5-5-1857, NC
d. 10-7-1924, Summit, AR
m. Melvina Knapp
b. 12-1868, MO
Joshua Finley had a previous wife who he left in Missouri with 5 children. He left Missouri and had his first child in Arkansas in 1886. I would like to find out the circumstances of his leaving Missouri, ie, was it the second wife or the robe found after he died.
In Ashe Co., NC, I found a Finley Toliver living 3 doors down from a Joshua Pritchard on the 1860 census. I figure this is his uncle and father-in-law.
3. Joshua Harrell Toliver
b. 9-9-1907,
Summit, AR
d. 11-25-1956,
Summit, AR
m. Marry

RUTH J. WHITE (RUTHJAN@prodigy.net) sends along a question which we can't answer. How did Taliaferro get to be Toliver? Or did Taliaferro get to be Toliver? The answer is that we don't know for certain, hope to someday know, and believe for the present that Toliver/Tolliver is based on the pronunciation of Taliaferro in Virginia where the name is pronounced T-O-L-I- V-E-R. What we do know without question is that there's a great big Toliver family out there in America trying to learn how they fit in.
*****I have been looking through some of the TT's and have found them very
interesting. I do have a couple of questions for you. Are all Tolliver names
interchanged with the Taliaferro? When did name change and how do I find out about
this?
Does anyone have information on this family? I would like to find out more about
them.
James Sheridan Stanley, sometimes called Sheridan married Julia Ann
Tolliver/Toliver. She was born 19 October 1873 Carter Co., Ky. and died 13 October
1953 Rowan Co., KY. I was told that her father's name was Robert, but I am not sure
that it is correct. I have someone else in mind. They had a large family and
this is all that I know about them. I do have the names of most of their children if
someone needs that information.
QUERIES
BEV THOMAS (bev@access.mountain.net)
****Thought it was time to place my query again. I am still looking for a Mildred Taliaferro who married a Samuel JAMES abt. 1743-46 in Orange Co., Va. I can not be 100% that she was a Taliaferro, have not found verification in the way of a marriage record. Mildred was associated with William Taliaferro, he was her security when she was executrix of her husband's will in 1757 in Orange Co. She stood along with, Col. George Taylor, Erasmus Taylor, Sarah Slaughter and Betty Slaughter as sureties at William's son, Nicholas Taliaferro's christening in October 1757. William was the son of John Taliaferro and Mary Catlett. Mildred and Samuel James named their eldest son, Catlett and a younger son, John. I believe Mildred is connected to the Taliaferro line, but have not been able to find ANY information to verify it. I am hoping by submitting my query again after some months maybe someone has the information that will help me. Thanks for help given.
[JB Comment: For Orange County researchers - the marriage registry appears to be a 'reconstituted' registry compiled from scraps of marriage bonds probably many years after the marriage occurred. Expect to ask questions when dealing with it.]

MARY ANN SAVAGE FLETCHER (fletch@tstar.net)
*****After many hours of research, I am still unable to determine the parents of Sarah
Taliaferro who married Anthony Thornton, II, my 6th great grandparents. According to
family records, she was first listed as the child of John Taliaferro & Sarah Smith.
The dates of births do not seem likely. In other research, I found she was listed as the
granddaughter of John & Sarah (Smith) Taliaferro. Any help or insight would be
extremely appreciated.
RESEARCH
LOUELLA (MOMANDBEE@aol.com) submits a perfect accompaniment to Debi Lehman's inquiries above. Maybe between the two of them, they can find out definitely who Samuel was and how they are related. Congratulations to all new-found cousins! Watch for a 'perfect' signoff from Louella in the final issue.
