SALUTATIONS

Hope all enjoyed a wonderful, restful holiday.  Boy, it chased in some fall weather for us here in Northern Virginia.  Great weather.  Everyone is gone, I believe.  This issue will be about half of the usual length because not enough information has been received for a full issue; and there are a couple of announcements that need to be sent.  Sure hope, now that the holiday is over, folks will have time to give the support we need to keep TTT going.

Here’s late word on a Toliver Family Reunion which I received a couple of  weeks ago.  I know the word is late getting to you  -  and appologize  -  I hope not too late for some who might wish to go can make plans to be there.

DOUGLAS R. TOLLIVER (Bingodude@email.msn.com)
****The Knoxville Tenn area Tolivers are having a family reunion at the Norris Lake State Park about 25 miles north of Knoxville Tenn off of I-75 on 12 Sept 1998 starting at 7 am until 10 pm. Take the Clinton/Norris exit and go east to the park pavillion.

Speaking of reunions, the response to the suggestion that we put together a “Meet and See” event for Spring 2000 was received with a lot of enthusiasm. Based on your reaction, I’ve contacted the Virginia Garden Club to get the date for Garden Week and in the hope of enlisting their support in trying to get Taliaferro homes opened during the week.  Their date has not yet been firmed up, but is traditionally in mid-April.  They responded with a great deal of enthusiasm for they feel that coordinating with our prospective visit will assist them in soliciting owners of Taliaferro family homes to participate.  I also plan to contact Caroline County to find out who the owner is of the old Taliaferro home on Taliaferro’s Mount.  Not only was it restored about ten years ago, the owners permitted an archeological group to search the site.  I’m hoping we will be able to arrange for a visit there.

So, as long as things continue to progress, I’ll continue to work through the details and will keep you informed.  We’re looking at 18 months prep time, so we should be able to put together a preeminent event for envisioning our Virginia heritage.

DIANE KEETON (Dskeeton@aol.com)
*****I have 2 Taliaferro ancestors.  The one I am sure of is Richard Taliaferro and his wife Rose Berryman.  From reading past issues of the Times I see that there are many people who are also descended from that line.  My ancestor is their daughter Behethland, who married James Stevens, and lived in Nelson County, Virginia.

The other Taliaferro ancestor has never been definitely identified.  She is Mildred, widow of Samuel James who died in 1755 in Orange Co. VA.   She was godmother for one of William Taliaferro's children, and William was surety for her to act as administratrix of her deceased husband Samuel James's estate.  This William was the son of John "The Ranger" Taliaferro.  Was Mildred his sister?

I have been doing family research for almost 20 years now and I have information that I will gladly share with anyone who is interested.

QUERIES

BEV THOMAS (bev@access.mountain.net)
*****Thought it was time to place my query again. I am still looking for a Mildred Taliaferro who married a Samuel JAMES abt. 1743-46 in Orange Co., Va. I can not be 100% that she was a Taliaferro, have not found verification in the way of a marriage record. Mildred was associated with William Taliaferro, he was her security when she was executrix of her husband's will in 1757 in Orange Co. She stood along with, Col. George Taylor, Erasmus Taylor, Sarah Slaughter and Betty Slaughter as sureties at William's son, Nicholas Taliaferro's christening in October 1757. William was the son/o John Taliaferro and Mary Catlett. Mildred and Samuel James named their eldest son, Catlett and a younger son, John. I believe Mildred is connected to the Taliaferro line, but have not been able to find ANY information to verify it. I am hoping by submitting my query again after some months maybe someone has the information that will help me. Thanks for help given.

JOYCE BROWNING (JBROWN@aol.com)
*****Bev’s query above is the motivation of another Mildred query.  The given name Mildred is traditional in the Taylor family and the Madison family through marriage.  A “Miss Milley Taylor” was the Godmother of the President James Madison who grew up in Orange County, VA.

A splinter group Taliaferros has been struggling to identify the wife of  Major James Franklin of Amherst County, grandson of Lawrence Franklin of  Orange County who lived adjacent to Zachary Taylor, grandfather of President Zachary Taylor.  Here’s what we’ve discovered:

Major James Franklin had a daughter named Mildren Taylor Franklin, born about 1774, who married Benjamin Taliaferro in Amherst County VA in 1792.  James Franklin appears to have been gone from the county, along with his father’s family, during the years immediately preceding the Revolution.  We do not know yet where they were, only that it’s evident they were not in Amherst County during this period.  They returned to Amherst County before 1775.

Orange County marriage records were partially lost during the relevant time period, so if the marriage occurred there, no record survived.  Wherever the marriage between James Franklin and ___________, possibly Taylor or Madison, took place, it was about 1772/3.

If anyone has information about the family of Mildred Taylor Franklin, wife of Benjamin Taliaferro of Amherst County, please contact me.  Many thanks.
