SALUTATIONS
Good morning. I do believe everyone has left the country. TTT is receiving virtually no information. Its taken over a month to accumulate this small amount, and some of its a reprint.
In spite of our lag in information at the moment, we continue to attract new subscribers. Can you believe that when I picked up TTT again last February, there were about 130 subscribers. Now there are over 250! Amazes me. Everyone is welcome - even more so if you dig in your file and tell us about a Taliaferro/Toliver ancestor who is beyond the very early generations whom weve covered pretty well. There are some out there that we havent learned much about - what about Samuel Taliaferro of Charlottesville ca 1750; or Lawrence Taliaferro of Fauquier of about the same time frame. We need to concentrate on our pre-Revolutionary War Taliaferros. Id love it if we could share someones biography of an ancestor from the mid to late 1700s, or letters written by 1800 Taliaferros.
Theres so much out there in boxes that needs to be pulled out and shared. Hope youll all make it your Taliaffero agenda to share something special about your ancestor.
I still hope our Toliver/Tolliver group can develop the right story about their original ancestor. Apparently, it wasnt Charles Taliaferro of Surry County NC, as I thought for years. If not, then where did that large family group come from? Weve clearly isolated them as all being descendants of an original Toliver in Ashe County NC. Was his name John? I hope someone will update us on the very early Toliver line. Maybe someone else, among these many new subscribers, can add a bit - and someone else can add another bit. And well find out more about this large family.
I hope that at least one hundred of you new subscribers will immediately
pick up mouse and send in your New Member Introductions. This is
the very base of Taliaferros helping each other discover their true
heritage. By meeting one new subscriber, Dave Boyle, Donna Hunter
and I are combining with him to answer old, old questions about one of
our Taliaferro ancestors. Working together, weve made some progress
- enough to realize that we will probably need to piece the right
story together from fragments viewed within the solid foundation of history.
As soon as we can, well share it with you.
What Im saying is that its the New Member Introduction that brings your ancestor to the attention of others with whom you can collaborate to learn more about them. This way everyone has an opportunity to develop research partners for solving specific mysteries. Dont be shy.

PEGGY SAMPLY REEN (explorer@pop.nlci.com) must have read my mind. Heres a great narrative of the heritage of her great grandfather of the late 1800s. Thanks so much, Peggy.
****
My great grand father was James Coleman Taliaferro. He was born
Feb. 22, 1851 in Weakley County TN and married Lucy Thomas Johnson in 1875.
I have not found out for sure which county the marriage took place, either
Gibson, Obion, or Weakley TN. They lived in all three but died in Gibson
County. Children were Myrtle, Conway, Eugene, Nannie, Molly, Lula,
and Lyndel. My grand mother was Lula Gertrude Taliaferro who married
William Warner Sample.
The next generation back was Dr. Benjamin Franklin Taliaferro, born
in 1821 in VA. I think it was Fort Bridge, King William Co. VA. He married
Mary A. - last name unknown, who was born in Va about 1830. I found them
in the Weakly county census in 1850 and 1860 with the children's names.
Children were James Coleman, John Calhoon, Virginia Lillian, Nannie, and
Benjamin F. In the 1860 census, the father, Benjamin, was not listed
so perhaps he died. The youngest child was 4.
The father of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Taliaferro was Walker Taliaferro
who married Mildred Coleman Ellett of Goochland County Va. I didn't find
their birth dates. Their children were Elizabeth, Mildred, Sarah, Agnes,
Lucy, John Walker, Augusstus, Lewis, Benjamin Franklin, Edwin T., Thomas,
Christopher Coleman and William E. I found that Elizabeth married John
Steuart in Trenton TN, John Married Caroline Harrison in Trenton TN, Walker
married Sarah Yancy in Trenton TN and Thomas married Jane B. Pope in Trenton
TN and Benjamin F. lived in Dresdon, Weakley Co. So I think I am on the
right track. I don't have any of the childrens birth dates. I assume all
of them were born in VA. There were several Doctors in the bunch.
Edwin T., Thomas was a surgeon in the confederate army, and my Dr Benjamin
Franklin.
Walker Taliaferro was the son of Christopher Taliaferro who married
Elizabeth Pollard and 2nd Miss Anderson. children were Mary, Lucy, Nancy,
William, John, and Walker Taliaferro. I don't have any dates on this family.
The next generation back is Charles Taliaferro and Lucy Walker. Charles
was born in 1689 in Virginia and died about 1734 in Essex County. He married
Lucy Walker of Urbana, Middlesex Co VA. Children were Lucy Taliaferro,
Walker, Christopher and Sarah Lucy Taliaferro.
Charles Taliaferro was the son of Charles Taliaferro born 1663 and
he was married to Mary Carter. Children Charles Taliaferro.
Next generation was Robert the immigrant.
I would welcome any information on any of these family groups as I
have just the bare bones.

****
I began my genealogy research last summer. I was not having much luck
finding out "who" my paternal great great grandmother and great great
great grandmother were. I had very little information to go on. I posted
queries everywhere I could think of. And this week was contacted by a lady
who gave me some wonderful information and sent me to this list. I would
love to hear from anyone else who may be connected to the Tolliver line
that I am.
My GGG grandmother was Jestine Tolliver daughter of James and Mary "Polly" Baldwin Toliver. Jestine was born in 1840 in NC and married John Martin Caldwell in 1859. They had 9 children. I descend from their youngest son Joseph.
Joseph Caldwell b 1877 married Della Rose Tolliver. Della was b in October of 1880 and she is the daughter of Drewry S. and Mahala Salyer Cooksey Tolliver.
I hope this is adequate for the newsletter. I am sure I will enjoy reading about the Tolliver family and I am quite interested in learning more about the Tolliver Wars that Velma shared a little bit of information with me about.
Thanks for the opportunity to share in your information gathering enterprise.
. . . . . Happy Hunting to us all.
QUERIES
JAMES C. MULKEY (MadDawg236@aol.com) -- surely someone can help him put together the family lore he remembers hearing about as a child.
**** Wonder if anyone has any info on the Tolliver War in
Roan Co, Ky around Morehead. I used to hear my father talk about it when
I was very young but don't remember a lot about it. I do know that we lost
a lot of the family due to that feud.

LOUELLA (MOMANDBEE@aol.com)
Joyce: material has been printed in your newsletter Re: Moses, Jesse, William, John and Charles and DAR Records are available for John Jesse's pension application includes bible record of births of his children (all with one L). Wayne Rogers who published the book Greener Pastures (in addition to Gone to Texas) notes Willia M. as the parents of this clan, and there are those of us who believe it also (rather than the John theory).
You need to contact Wayne Rogers and find out how to get your hands on a copy of the book, which will answer a lot of your questions on this clan. He admits Gone to Texas had some mistakes in it - but Greener Pastures I found to be quite "right on" with material we have been working on for several years (we think Moses is our tie-in).
Moses was born 1750/53, Jesse 1756, William 1758, John 1760, Sarah 1762, Charles 1765, Lucy 1766 - Jesse died 1838 in Ashe Co., NC, Charles in 1832 in Lawrence Co. IN, John 1863 in Alleghany Co. NC, Moses 1821 on way to IN, William 1824 in NC.
Jesse's notations show he was born in Farquier Co. VA, moved while young with Father to near Richmond, VA (James River) then to Wilkes Co., NC.
I am sure Wayne will be able to tell you where a copy of his book is
near you -- or loan you a copy of his.
RESPONSES
Here are some thoughtful, very helpful, responses to some comments/observations in the June/July issues of TTT. Many thanks to all of you for attention and participation.
BUDDY JACKSON (TJack98100@aol.com)
****Enjoyed the Independence Edition. One part had William T. Lewis, bond on estate of Richard/Dorcas Taliaferro, and William T. Lewis apparently related ---
---William Terrell Lewis was b. 1718 Hanover Co VA and died in TN. He moved from Hanover to Albemarle Co VA, then to Surry Co NC. He represented Surry Co. in Legislature 1781, 83,85,86,88.
William T. Lewis was the brother of John Lewis who married Sarah Taliaferro (June 7, 1727-- Jan 20 1769), daughter of Richard Taliaferro and Rose Berryman, this being one of several Lewis/Taliaferro connections. This branch of the Lewis family descended from John Lewis, b. 1594, Monmouthshire,Wales--died in New Kent Co. (later King & Queen) VA
William T. Lewis applied for military commissions for all of his sons old enough to fight. He stated that "If the British come into Surry Co, hewould arm his negroes and fight them himself."
John Lewis/Sarah Taliaferro, my 5th great grandparents, name Taliaferro
stayed in family, have a great uncle John Taliaferro Lewis.

SUE TOLLIVER-POMPA (SKP2307@aol.com) takes issue with ye olde editor. Hooray. Conflict is a teacher where ever you find it - well, mostly. Hope we can carry this line of thinking forward, all you Tolivers.
****In response to your comment, Issue 45, regarding the progenitor
of the NC Toliver/Tollivers. I don't see how Charles, son of Dr.
John could be the father to Jesse and siblings. According to his
wife's deposition to gain pension, Jesse was born in 1756. If I have the
right "Dr. John", he was
born 1733 and his oldest son, Richard was born the same year as Jesse.
Dr. John Taliaferro could not have been a grandfather at 26. I know
a lot of people have their own opinions as to the father of Jesse Toliver.
My vote is for "John". (My only proof being the family bible).
Now if someone could just come up with the names of a mother and grandparents
for Jesse we could work at proving or disproving.

****I have checked my records and found no Graves connection there--doesn't
mean there wasn't one. I suspect it may lie with Harry/Henry Taliaferro's
(1737-1803) family of Mountain Run, VA (Franklin County). He had
two daughters Lucy and Melinda who are unaccounted in the records and fit
with your time frame. Harry was a son of Kemp 1714-49 m 1736 Mary
Thornton. His
children scattered to all the newly settled areas of the country. References
in Colonial Caroline by Campbell and Virginia Will Records by Genea Pub
Co. He lived in what is today called Stevensburg, between Culpeper and
Fredericksburg on Route 4.
Children in case some are recognizable to your family:
John m 1795 Alice Leckie
Harry, Jr. (1)m 1800 Elizabeth Lovell (2) 1802 Rebecca
Craine
Catherine "Caty" m 1794 William Rucker
Judith m 1786 Absalom Mendenhall
Lindsey
Elizabeth m ...........Leckie
Alice m 1797 James Thom
Nancy m James Crain
Lucy
Melinda
Sarah m ...........Leckie
Harry cut John off in his will (Culpeper Co Courthouse)but he provided
for Alice and the children. He must have offended mightily.

LOUELLA HUGUENARD (MOMANDBEE@aol.com)
****Toliver with one L was in use before Dr. John's children were born. Rev. War records show Jesse (ca1756) and Moses (ca1750/53) Toliver.
NC land records for Jesse, Moses and other also show the one L. Their brothers William, Charles and John were also using one L.
Not sure if the following has appeared in newsletter, but will pass it along.
Catherine Taliaferro born ca1666, daughter of Robert the immigrant and Katherine, married 1682 Col. John Battaile. Col. John's second wife was Elizabeth, sister of Sarah Smith who married Col. John Taliaferro the Ranger.
Re: Richard and Dorcas Perkins daughters, refer to Solidiers & Patriots in Battle of Guilford Court House 15 Mar. 1781 Vol. 3, Page 102 by Rachel Caldwell Chap. NSDAR.
Richard and Dorcas had daughters Jean who married a Mr. Lokey (Lakey? Lekey?) and Judith who married a Rhedon A. Greene in addition to Mary Hardin Lingo.
Hope this helps.
