*****I am a descendent of Jesse & Frankie Stamper and I live in
southern West Virginia. I presently am working on getting the Stamper
line put together. I am looking for the marriage of Hiram Toliver and Nancy
Jones in co-ordination with A. Spurlin and Eleanor Waters. I just made
a tour of the border NC/VA counties last week with no luck. I am going
to do the Va side next week.
I was also in the Albemarle Co courthouse last week and found several
marriages I cannot identify as follows:
Edward s of John F &
Mary B married to Eliza Dickinson 10-26-1857
Frank s of Lewis and Harriet
married to Ellen Carr 10-26-1875
H. A. s of Richard &
Sally married Sallie H Ashlin 11-16-1887
John W son of Jacob &
Susan married Annie C Champion? 09-29-1880
Mary A d of Alen S &
Agnes married W. M. Chancellor 03-18-1863
For Wilkes Co., VA I have Edmond m Patsy Higgins 06-23-1827.
I have research from 3 sources..Shermans book, a college project done
in 1990 by Alan Dieble mainly on the Jesse & Frankie Stamper line forward
and 1 lineage chart I am not sure where came from.
The Dieble research has raised a question for me and Alan Spurlin. We show Allen Tolliver, I have the wife of Allen son of Jesse to be Susan Mash. A lot of other work shows it to be Susannah Finger and that they went to Ind/Ill, but in comparing the dates of children born in IND/ILL to Allen/ Finger to the dates of children born to Allen/Susan? in NC the dates do not work. There must be another Allen floating around or something because there are children being born to both sets of Allen/Susans in both areas at the same time. My Susan Mash names comes from the work of Alen Dieble. I have not had a chance to go to Ashe/Alleghany cos NC to double check. Alan
Dieble was a college chum of one of my cousins.

*****My name is Susan Tolliver-Pompa. I'm 43, married and
have two young boys. I live in Burlington, IA. I've been working
on my family tree since I was a teenager. I grew up in an area of
IL where the 2 Tolliver families were brothers. My dad, Ernest, and
his brother, Andy, moved to the area (Quad Cities) after the war from North
Dakota.
So for starters.... I thought we were the only Tollivers in the world and originated in ND. I am one of the many descendent of Jesse Toliver 1756-1838 (m to Frankey Stamper, Ash Co., NC) who's been searching for his parentage.
I hope to finish reading your past newsletters in the next couple of days. But for now I would like to comment to Cleona Random in issue 15/2 (I started at the end and worked backwards)
Yes, Charles Taliaferro and Ann Kemp have been listed many times as the parents OF Wm, John, Charles, Jesse, Lucy and Sara. But if you do any work with the ages of John (son of Robert 1) and John's son, Charles and his supposed Children, you'll see that it just doesn't work. I would like to dig further into your book by Alice Pritchard. I can't tell you for certain that Charles and Ann are not the parents. But I think its would be a mistake to take Sherman's book at face value without proof. Keep digging.
QUERIES
JEAN KYRLACH ( JKyrlach@aol.com) ***** I think your idea of going through Robert's children one by one is great. It seems it would be most helpful to have approximate birth dates of each one.
Another question I have is: was Robert ll the first born or was Francis? In the English naming pattern did they name the first son after the father, or after the grandfather?? In my records I have Katherine born before Charles & Richard.
In regard to the estate of Francis, I have the following abstract : Francis Taliaferro, Inventory. Last day of Aug. 1710. Total valuation L376.19.2, including eight Negroes valued at L200, and items in the hall, chamber, small chamber, parson's room and kitchen. (Essex Co. Deed & Wills, 1707-1711)
I don't know how much detail you want for each child.
[Editor's Note: Responding to Jean's wondering how much detail TT wants for each child of Robert and Katherine Debnam Taliaferro, I believe that we need to first determine the vital statistics; i.e. birthdate, location of home, marriage, names and birth order of children, death. Once we have a firm base developed for each child, we can expand to include information about their children.
RESPONSES

*****Thank you for the info. Glad to get you hooked up with the newsletter.
I was amazed to find it too. Malinda was the relative about whom
no one in my family knew anything--anything--because she died when her
son Frederick-- my grandfather-- was only a year or two old. And
now there's a wealth, thanks to the newsletter and the contacts I have
made through it. There are some real experts there who are happy
to share.
The Tolliver you mentioned who couldn't trace Malinda must not have looked in the records for neighboring Wyoming Co. I found in the book Marriage Records of Wyoming County, WVA, 1854-1880i: "September 9,1880, Wm. A. Wood, 21, born Mercer Co., VA, [and] Malinda Tolliver, born Wyoming Co. WVA. Married by Wm. G. Phillips" For a long time I didn't know who Malinda's parents were, but the newsletter solved that. Malinda's descendants (you asked for it), based on my research and contact with her grandchildren (my aunts and uncles), are:
Malinda Jane Tolliver m. William A. Wood on Sep 9, 1880 in Wyoming Co.
William was b July 24, 1860 Mercer Co. d. Feb 5, 1954.
Their three children were:
1) Jesse m. Rosie McBride and had Ezra, Elizabeth, Lily,
Bill b. 1911,
Dewey "Dude" b. Jun 22, 1915, and Ira "Tom."
2) Mary Elizabeth m. Everett Warren Lester and had
Eula May, Clyde,
Reba, and Maxine
3) Frederick Douglas b. 7/17/1887 at Pineville,
Wyoming Co. d. June 1984 Mercer Co. He m. (1) Effie Mae Blevins b.
8/13/1895 d. 1938. Fred and Effie's children were: Robert Lloyd b.
8/11/1914 m. Myrtle Ellen Rowland (my parents); Willard Clyde m. Juanita
Craft; Hildred Ellen b. 1/13/1927 m. John Dee Rockwood; Mildred Helen m.
Charlie William Carrico; Delphia Arminda b. 11/10/1931 m. Roy Huff Connor;
Richard Earl b. 3/19/1923 m. Mildred Gwynn; Harley David b. March 1921
d. March 1921.
Frederick Douglas m. (2) Lydia Laura Lanford and had James Douglas, Matthew Delano, William Ray, Mararet Ann, Freddie Eugene, Jackson Wayne, David Allen, Roger Lee, Carolyn Sue, and Juanita Louise. You can find the family tree of Malinda's husband William Wood on Judith Prince's homepage on family tree maker.com. I would welcome particularly any "background interest" info you might have on the Tollivers in terms of what they did for a living, why they left Fauquier Co. and moved to NC and then to the deep hills of VA/Wva, etc.

*****In searching for my Witheringtons, we visited Conecuh Co, AL and
picked up a book "History of Conecuh Co, AL. In it was a reference
to Dr. Charles T. Taliaferro who was promoted to "full Surgeon" in
the 4th Alabama reg in 1864 and was a resident of the county in 1881.
I also have a Charles R Taliaferro b 1870 in Conecuh Co who possibly might
be a son md Irene Augusta Lee.
MISCELLANY
Taking a cue from Jean's question above, the below information will be helpful. A subscriber of another netletter I compile contributes the below article which may help clarify some questions about 'naming systems.' Millicent is the North American Secretary of the Dalton Genealogical Society based in England. She grew up in England and lives now in California.
IMPORTANCE OF GIVEN NAMES
Names can be quite helpful in recognizing ancestors. It was a
practice in many countries to honor their relatives by naming their children
after them. This was a very common practice in England and given names
were carried down from generation to generation. Each major Dalton
line had its own set of names. In Lancashire County, England, the
predominant Dalton given names were: William, Robert, Thomas, James,
John, Richard, Edward for the males; and Mary, Ellen, Jane, Margaret, Ann,
Elizabeth, Sarah for the female offspring.
Quite frequently, the hierarchical system for naming was observed. The first- born male was named after the paternal grandfather and the first-born female was named after the maternal grandmother. The second-born male was named after the maternal grandfather and the second-born female was named after the paternal grandmother. The remaining children were named after uncles and aunts, often according to age. This knowledge can be helpful in going backwards to identify family members, especially grandparents.
In the case of a child born out of wedlock, this pattern was not usually observed. It was also not uncommon for a couple to have one or two children before they married and the pattern was not observed in these cases either. They were generally named after maternal aunts or uncles who were lower in the hierarchy. And incidentally these children, especially if they were females, often did not assume the surname of their father but carried their mother's maiden name throughout their lives. Sons were more likely to receive their father's surname. Children born after the marriage, generally were named in the hierarchical order.
When a given name occurs that is quite unusual, this name can be very helpful, especially in trying to isolate families from the baptismal records or from the English Censuses where Dalton families all carry the same names. If is had not been for the odd name of "Herbert," my search would have been much more difficult than it was.
