SALUTATIONS

Announcement about Back Issue Web Site: CARL KIRTON who works behind the scenes in behalf of all of us by managing the Back Issues Web Site will be out of town for at least three weeks.  He will update the web site when he returns.  Carl,, I'd like to that this opportunity to thank you from all TALIAFERRO TIMES subscribers for your contribution to our effort.  As subscribers send copies of some of their exchanges to me, I often see one subscriber referring another to information they can access through the web site.  You're providing a tremendous service to all of us. A subscriber to MOORE NEWS who is an investigator of credit card fraud and sends along  the following advice.  I've had  an online experience similar to Jack's on two occasions, so this con technique is not unusual and will probably become more prevalent.   *****I'll try to explain what occurred. . . While logging on, I was having some difficulty bringing up my E-mail - an instant message appeared on the upper left of the screen from AOLsecrep saying that there was a problem on the account and to reenter my AOL info, i.e., Name, Address, Telephone,  Credit Card No, & Expiration date along with a password for clarification.   A bell went off in my thick skull which said, AOL never asks for billing info or passwords on line. I did notice that the top of the screen also said ACL, so I immediately called AOL to make a change of my credit info, the internal password has been changed only.  MOST IMPORTANT I called my Credit Card Company and reported the account number may have been compromised, so the account was closed and I will get a new account and card in a few days.

These cons on the net are getting smarter every day and each of us has to be alert.   Call your On-Line Provider before giving any info to any one on-line.

When this happens:  You should contact the On-Line Provider to notify them of the attempt and change the password immediately.

If the cons get your credit card account number:  call immediately to report the card as lost or stolen and tell them that the number was given to a third party.  They will cancel the card to preclude any charges being made.  I also recommend that the credit card company be called in several days to assure that no new charges have occurred.  If so, dispute those charges.

KAREN WOOD (KarenWood@aol.com) *****I live in Delaware, born in Lynchburg Va, and I am the first of my mother's direct family to not remain in VA in over 300 years.  I have a huge data base of Virginia families (all mine) which, as of last week, includes my 7th Great grandmother Elizabeth Taliaferro Madison, wife of Roger Madison.

Roger Madison died in Halifax Co, VA in 1801/2, with Elizabeth having predeceased him.  They had 6 daughters and one son-Ambrose Madison.  The daughters were Catherine m. Richard Collins- my grandparents; Ann m. Henry Cox and had son Taliaferro Cox; Elizabeth m. Rice Moore; Frances m. Elisha Collins; Peggy French Madison; and another female who married George Richards. George Richards is in the will of Roger Madison, but his daughter must have been deceased as her name is not given.  Elizabeth Taliaferro and Roger Madison had two grandsons named Taliaferro.

Elizabeth Taliaferro Madison's father is said to be Robert in a recent article in the Va. Genealogist.  I would like more info on who Robert's wife and ancestors were.  The only thing I know at this time is the store in Williamsburg, which bears the same name.

THE PHANTOM (VLTP@aol.com)  The Phantom addressed the question below to Frank Richey who is presenting the wills of several Taliaferro's.  Frank's answer follows in Responses.  Space didn't permit that all of the wills contributed by Frank be printed at the same time.  Their conversation is informative and interesting. *****Robert H. Taliaferro, s/o Richard & Rebecca (Cocke) b11/1/1783 m l. 1804 Elizabeth (Thornton) Wilkerson widow of William W. and mother of Cary Wilkerson, daughter of Elizabeth (Cocke) Thornton who was a sister of Rebecca Cocke.

Question: was this the same William Wilkerson who married Sarah Taliaferro and had 1 daughter?  Was Elizabeth his 2nd wife??

Robert and Elizabeth had Richard Sterling Taliaferro m Ellen Brown dsp; Robert dsp 7/1/1807; Ann m John Mann and apparently she died for Robert m 2.Frances ???? d 2/22/1826(Va Herald).   Richard and Rebecca also had Benjamin Taliaferro d bef 1804 , Rev War Soldier, who m Sophia Ann Tazewell d/o Henry and had Richard Hartwell and Henry Tazewell then Sophia m 2. Larkin Smith d9/28/1815 Norfolk.  Do you know anything of these two sons?   Richard & Rebecca's son Richard died without issue according to my notes.  This is the grandson Richard in Richard the Architect will.  Is this correct?

RESPONSES

FRANK RICHEY (73100.564@CompuServe.COM) *****Dear Phantom, you are jumping ahead of yourself (G). The will of William Wilkerson will be published in next week's TT.  It will answer most of the questions that you have asked.

>>. Question: was this the same William Wilkerson who married SarahTaliaferro and had 1  daughter?  Was Elizabeth his 2nd wife??<<

William was married twice, first to Sarah "Sally" Taliaferro and second to Elizabeth Thornton. By his first wife he had one daughter, Elizabeth Wythe Wilkerson who married Richard F. Hannon. By his second wife he had one son, Cary Wilkerson who married Mary McCandlish, daughter of William and Mary Nelson Polly  Taliaferro McCandlish.  Sarah Taliaferro was daughter of Richard and Rebecca Cocke Taliaferro  and Elizabeth Thornton was the daughter of Sterling and Elizabeth Hartwell Cocke Thornton.

I have nothing on the two sons of Benjamin and Sophia Ann Tazewell Taliaferro.

>>  Question:  This is the grandson Richard in Richard the Architect will. Is this correct?<<

Richard and Rebecca's son, Richard, was the one mentioned in Richard the Architect s will and, ye,s he died without issue.

>>  Question to you:   Who was William Wilkerson s father?  <<

TALIAFERROS OF EUROPE

JUDY CANANT (AslanJ@aol.com)  I now refer to Judy as "The Font."  Her families, for which she has mucho grande information, twine in and out of all Taliaferro lines, I believe.

*****I noticed the name Francis Dade in this past issue of Talliaferro Times. I do not have Francis, but I have a small amount of info on the Dade family. My ancestress, Miss __?__ Peyton, married first a Dade; then, as a widow, she married my ancestor, Daniel French.  Also, notice that she had a brother named Francis Peyton - the name Francis could be significant in tying this branch of the Dade family to the Francis Dade mentioned.  See below.  I do not know if this is of interest to you re: Taliaferro stuff, but thought it might tie together with something.  (Incidentally, this line is my Capt George Gray line (again - they were kin to EVERYBODY) <G>

DAVE TALIAFERRO ( dtaliaf@Rt66.com)  *****Letter of Resignation of James T. Taliaferro and information about his family. Camp Curtis near Pilot Knob, Mo. Oct.10, 1862

S.N Boyd Col. 24th Reg.Mo. vols
Sir,

I have the honor herewith to tender to you my resignation as Capt. Co. G of your regiment.

My reason for so doing is from wounds received in a conflict with rebel Guerillas last spring, the particulars of which I respectfully refer you to accompaning Medical Certificate. I regret exceedingly Colonel that I am thus forced to a severance from a regiment with whom my appreciations both with
officers and men have been universally of the most agreeable character but I felt that my duty to my country enforces me to give way to those who deserve the position now held by me and whose physical abilities will enable them to take the field in active service which I am sorrowfully not able to do with a God speed to our cause and acceptable to our Regiment.

I am Colonel most Respectfully your obedient servant

James T. Talliaferro
Capt. Co. "G"

In 1800, Richard Taliaferro was employed by General James Taylor to sell lands for him in the neighborhood of Boston. In 1802 he brought his family from Kentucky and settled on a farm now owned by Jacob Balshizer. He was twice married; his first wife was a Davis*, by whom he had five children, - Zack, Lucy, Jones, Matilda, and Emily. His seconf wife was Rebecca Riddle, by whom he had six children, -Jefferson, Sarah, Elizabeth, Kitty, Riddle, and William. Richard Taliaferro wqas a native of Caroline C0., Va. He was under George Rogers Clark in his memorable expedition against Vincennes and Kaskaskia in 1778.

For services rendered in that expedition he received 200 acres of land in Indiana, opposite Louisville, Ky. After Clark's campaign he returned to Virginia, where he remained until 1792, when he came to Kentucky with Gen. James Taylor, settling near Newport. Jones enlisted in the war of 1812, at the age of sixteen, and was in the battle of Brownstown, near Detroit, and was taken prisoner at that place a short time afterwards. Zack was also in the war of 1812, having enlisted in 1813. He was in the battle of Lundy's Lane and Chippewa, and for bravery at the former place he was made ensign on the field by Gen. Winfield Scott. He was a surveyor by profession and a man of considerable ability, but owing to his intemperate habits it did not avail him much.

Richard Taliaferro died in 1835, while on a visit to Ohio, and was buried on his son's farm, he having previously removed to Indiana. In person he was fine looking, of medium height, and stoutly built. Thomas Bragg, a distant relative* of Richard Taliaferro, settled about the same time on the farm now
the property of Valentine Snider. His family consisted of his wife and five children, -Richard, Mary, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Rebecca. He enlisted in the war of 1812 and was killed at the battle of the River Raisin.

Notes:  Davis* - actually was Sarah Jones relative* - his brother-in-law
