Be prepared to "rough it" a little, as there is no running water or electricity and it is on top of a mountain. Temporary facilities will be available. Dress for cool weather, as the wind often whips through.  For
directions or questions, please email me at taboykin@unity.ncsu.edu.

Between Anne Baker and me, an announcement didn't come out right last week, so here's a repeat.  Hope no one was inconvenienced.

ANNE BAKER (abaker@searnet.com) *****With reference to the address of the URL to take you to the VSL Bible Collection Index, the wrong one was listed.  This page has become one of my favorite "stomping grounds"

1. You pull up a list of all bibles in the VSL collection that have a specific surname somewhere
               in the Bible.
2. You pull up the index to the bible you are interested in
3. Best of all then you can pull up a photo-copy of each bible page and send it to your printer or
           you can just view it. As yet they do not have the capability to have it saved on your hard
           drive.
http://image.vtls.com/bible/virtua-advanced.html

If you haven't tried this, here are some directions:  -----  In the first search box   Type  Any surname AND bible  -----  In the drop down menu beside this box - choose SUBJECT KEYWORD -----  Don't do anything to the 2nd search box.

MARSHALL TYLER (Mtyler4838) *****I descend from Robert the immigrant's great grandson Kemp Taliaferro and then Kemp's son Harry Taliaferro. I have been researching the Taliaferro family for 10 years and have a vast amount of information.

A query I have is:  Who are the wives of Kemp Taliaferro who died in 1749 in Caroline CO VA and his son Harry Taliaferro who died in 1803 in Culpeper Co VA.

JOHN MANNING (JWMMJJJ@aol.com) *****I retired from the US Air Force in 1991, after 36 years of "seeing the world."  My wife, Mae, and I live in Montgomery AL.  I was reared in Georgia and she in Florida and Georgia.  We have three children and five grandchildren.  We enjoy RV-ing, and that has allowed us to spend some time searching for ancestors in places we've never lived.

We are looking specifically for a connection between Taliaferro's and Shells/Schells.  Green Schell was born in VA about 1775.  His wife, Mary E. H. (Polly) Mosley, was born in VA about 1793.  They were married 1813 in Brunswick County, VA and migrated to Hancock County, GA around 1814.  Due to the prevalence of Toliver/Taliaferro/Taleferro name among male descendent of Green and Polly, I believe someone in my maternal ancestor line was a Taliaferro.  So far I have been unable to find the connection and would appreciate any help you might be able to offer.

TERRI BOYKIN (taboykin@unity.ncsu.edu) [Note:  It's really gratifying to discover young family members who are interested in discovering their family history.  Terri is a graduate student at North Carolina State University  - a special welcome to you, Terri.] ******First, thank you so much for all the work on the netletter. It is such a help!  If you need any assistance this summer, please let me know.

I'm not exactly a "new" member, but I haven't participated much during the academic year because of other responsibilities. I was reviewing my netletters when I realized that I haven't sent in my bio, so here goes:

My mother is a Tolliver, descendent of Hiram Tolliver/Hyrum Taliaferro, (b. 1808, Ashe Co., NC; d. 1895) and Nancy Ellen HILL (b. 1808, place unk; d. 1889, place unk). I have a fairly strong line back to Bartholomew Taliaferro, and I'm grateful to everyone on the list who's helped me confirm this line.
I am fortunate to have many older relatives with agile minds; they remembered a family myth that they originally came from Italy! My present research interest is Hiram, s/o Jesse Taliaferro (b. 1756, Faquier Co, VA; d. 1838, Allegheny Co, NC) and  Franky (Frances) Stamper (b. 1767 Amherst, VA; d. 1850-60, Allegheny Co., VA). Hiram is the 5th of 6 sons, most of whom went to Indiana. I am slowly getting information on his descendent, but Hiram is a puzzle.

Why did Hiram travel to Wyoming Co., WV? Where did he die, and what did he do for a living (besides farm)?

QUERIES

DIANE SCHUMACHER (NS Giraffe@aol.com) ****I'd like information about Mary Taliaferro, b. 1685, m. 1703 to Col. Francis Thornton.  Their children were Alice, Reuben, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Eliza, Francis III, John and Mildred.

CLARA B. DANIEL (ClaraGen@aol.com) *****Need parents of Mary Taliaferro who mar. Echols Berry Daniel in Talbot County, Georgia in early 1800's.

TALIAFERROS OF EUROPE

Last week, TT carried a very brief overview of the Bernard family which forms an important part of the early Taliaferro extended family which we recently discovered.  Now, Judy Canant has been able to send information to expand this family for our better understanding of the Taliaferro/Bernard associations.
Thanks so much, Judy, for providing insight for subscribers of TT.

COLONIAL TALIAFERROS

Early subscribers will remember that the initial issues of  TT contained many references to "Richard the Architect" of Williamsburg fame.  Frank Richey has obtained and shares with us the wills of "Richard the Architect" and his son and husband of his grand daughter.  The architect's will will appear in this issue to be followed next week by the other two wills.  Many thanks to, Frank, for this contribution.

FRANK RICHEY (73100.564@CompuServe.COM) ******The first of the following Wills is the will of Richard the Architect. He is my 5th ggrandfather. He built the Wythe House in Williamsburg.  My wife and I went to Williamsburg and when I told them that Richard Taliaferro was my ggggggrandfather, we were given an inside tour of the Wythe house and the Governor's mansion.

The second Richard Taliaferro, will dated August 24,1788 was his son, my 4th ggrand father.  Rebecca Cocke Taliaferro was his wife. Daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Hartwell Cocke

William Wilkinson married Sarah Taliaferro, Richard and Rebecca's daughter, sister to my Mary Nelson Taliaferro McCandlish.  Confused?   Hope this helps, And you're more than welcome. I hope to hear from other TT subscribers.

COPY OF THE WILL OF   Richard Taliaferro dated February 3, 1775

In the name of God Amen, I, Richard Taliaferro of the Parish and county of James City, being aged, but of sound mind and memory, do make my last will and testament as forth with.

I give and desire my house and lotts in the city of Williamsburg situate on the west side of Palace Street, and on the North side of the Church yard, to my son-in-law Mr. George Wythe and his wife, my daughter Elizabeth during their lives ..

I give to my grand son Richard Taliaferro my Negro boy Sam.  All the rest residue and remainder of my estate real and personal, I give and desire to my son Richard Taliaferro and his heirs forever - and I do hereby constitute and appoint my Son-in-law the said George Wythe and my said son Richard Taliaferro Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
(Copy of a handwritten  copy of my great-grand mother's -Lelia Jane Vaughan McCandlish.)

RESEARCH

DAVE TALIAFERRO ( dtaliaf@Rt66.com) Many thanks, Dave, for this contribution about a later Taliaferro family.  Sometimes we bury our heads in the far past and appreciate being moved forward a more recent past.  Keeps our perspective clear.  Speaking of keeping our perspective clear, I especially appreciate learning about our Taliaferro Mothers.  Early Taliaferro researchers didn't pay much attention to them.  But I'll resist climbing up on that soapbox.

*****There is a lot left to transcribe but I thought TT readers would enjoy this bit. I have not been able to contact Thomas Knight of Lebanon, Mo who sent me this to get the book title and author, but I believe it is "History of Laclede County."  I will send the source and rest of the text as soon as I can.  I also have a photo of Elizabeth Curry Taliaferro.
~~~~~~~~~
Perhaps the greatest inconvenience of the times for the women was the curtailing of their freedom in going about.  As Lebanon was occupied by one army or the other from the beginning to the close of the war, this was sometimes a serious embarrassment. Even outlying farm neighborhoods were not free from the nuisance of soldiers as detachments were liable to camp in the vicinity of a good water supply or where there was a fair outlook for plunder. Anyone traveling about the country was liable to be held up for questioning as a potential spy. Then there was always the danger of meeting prowling irregulars who had little respect for women and no hesitations about seizing anything that appealed to their cupidity if there was hope of getting away with it. So that any woman mounted on a fairly decent looking horse might be left on foot miles from home even if she met no worse harm.
But it would have taken something more potent than soldiers, Federal or Confederate, or brutal guerrillas, to have held these dauntless women mewed up in their premises. When they needed to go they went. Few in that day rode astride. Usually even the boldest of them was too modest to do anything to show that she had legs. So dressed in a long riding skirt, usually of black cotton or woolen material, they perched on one side of the horse in what we, today, would consider a precarious position. Not so with the women of the Civil War days. They took fences or ditches with ease on a well broken horse, if one could be found, or such broken down nags as had escaped the general confiscation.
During the first year of the war, Mrs.Taliaferro, wife of Captain J.T. Taliaferro, and a relative, Lyde Barnett, living on Cobb's Creek, wanted to go to town, but as the Taliaferro horses had all been taken they were obliged to borrow the horses of Johnson Furr, Lyde's stepfather. Furr had enlisted in the Confederate army then stationed in Lebanon. The journey was made in safety but no sooner had they reached the town than they were arrested as spies and the two fine horses taken as booty. The commanding officer insisted they must be locked up, though Rachel Hooker, a good Confederate woman, expostulated with him. "You can't keep Mrs.Taliaferro. She has a little baby", she said. But this officer insisted that he could. Just at this moment Johnson Furr came by and recognizing his horses, demanded to know how they came there and who was holding them. Explanations followed and his step-daughter and Mrs. Taliaferro were permitted to leave while the officer had to offer apologies to Furr for confiscating his horses.
Captain Taliaferro, while escorting a supply train of 100 wagons from Rolla to South Mountain, was wounded during an engagement at Licking and sent back to Rolla to recuperate. Mrs. Taliaferro made her way alone on horseback to his bedside. Union troops were holding the Wire Road between Lebanon and Rolla and she had not proceeded far on her way until she was challenged by sentinels. She told them who she was but they commanded her to turn and go back the way she came. She looked at them steadily and replied "My husband Captain Taliaferro is wounded at Rolla and I am going to him," and she went.
