SALUTATIONS
We may be descended from an Italian family, but I bet there were lots of marriages with people whose families originated in Ireland. I don't know a better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than by remembering the Irish Prayer.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
The sunshine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again --
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

TODD WHITE (todds@shentel.net) *****My grandmother was (June V. Tolliver), born in McAlpin WV (within walking distance of Mullens, Wyoming Co. WV) in 1920. For many years there was a hotel in Mullens, owned by my great-grandmother, Lynette (Shumate) Tolliver, wife of Berdine Tolliver. Recently I "found" him. He died in the early 1970's in Dallas, TX, having been married for the fifth time. His father was James Amos Tolliver, his father was Jesse Tolliver, preceded by Hiram Tolliver. Hiram lived for the bulk of the 19th century (1808-1895). Hiram and his wife moved from Ashe Co., NC in the mid-1850's to Wyoming County. Hiram was the 10th child of Jessee Toliver and Frances (or Frankie) Stamper.
Jessee was a Revolutionary War soldier, as was Frankie's father. I have the widow's pension file for Jessee. Jessee was born in Faquier Co. VA about 1756. His parents are listed as Charles and Anne (Kemp) Taliaferro, but due to their ages in 1756, this is probably not right. Happy to answer questions, and would love to have info added. BTW, I've kept the family name living--my oldest daughter is Mackenzie Tolliver White and, suitably, interested in the family tree.
It would be nice to plot out the migration of this family from VA to
the hinterlands.

CHARLIE WRIGHT (Ebclwright)
*****Am sending what I have, but not all is from original research
by me. I have information back to John Bourn III, b abt 1695 near Fredricksburg,
Va, d abt 1760 Culpepper Co Va, where he settled in 1734 on the Rapidan
River after selling his inherited land near Fredricksburg. Married
1st Miss ?? Ramsey and had children Sarah, Francis and William. M
2nd Eleanor Davis and had 8 more children. Balance of info from others.
John Bourne II, England?, d 1721 Fredricksburg, Spotsylvania Co. Va, will proven 20 Jun Tappahannock, Essex Co VA, m: Elizabeth Johnson, b 1681 Va, d 1760 Fredricksburg. Elizabeth is shown on an LDS pedigree chart to be the daughter of Henry Johnson and Mary Taliaferro, born 1658, in Va. Mary's line goes back to Bartholomew. From World Family Tree researchers, I find Mary Taliaferro, b 1658, Va, as the wife of Henry Johnson.
John Bourne, England, d 1695, Tappahannock, Essex Co, Va, married (in England?) Christian (Taliaferro-- this on a WFT record). Christian m 2nd Henry Johnson, widower, after 1695 and before 30 Oct 1702 when Henry's will was proved. Henry had been m to Eliza Mussett, South Farnham Parish, Essex Co, Va (AND MARY TALIAFERRO??)
Stephen Bourne, Wyersdale, Lancashire, England, d 19 Dec 1687 there, married Anne? Ann came with sons from Plymouth, Devon, England, 14 ct 1689, settled 1st Stafford Co, then Richmond Co Va. She m 2nd Edward Price, before 20 ct 1695 when his will was proved in Essex Co Va.
Looks like I might turn out to be a Taliaferro twice!

LARRY Oct (LSchellMi) *****My interest in Taliaferro is because my
2nd GGrandfather named his 2nd son Taliaferro. My cousin in Ga. believes
they named him that because of the custom of tying maiden names together.
I live in Dearborn, Mi. My Father Silas Schell was born in Morgan Co.,
Ga 1905, His Father John R. Schell was born in Putnam Co., Ga 1859, His
Father Samuel Schell was born in Hancock Co., Ga 1821 and His Father Green
was born in Va. about 1775. Most records spell Green's last name as Shell.
He married Mary "Polly" Moseley in Brunswick Co., Va Sep 1813. I have about
70% of our family tree from that point to present, but nothing on Green
from the time he left Va. Other than the fact either he or his father was
a veteran of Rev. War or War of 1812. This made him eligible for Ga. land
lottery. Any information you may run across regarding a Green Shell marrying
a Taliaferro would be greatly appreciated.

JOHN WOOD (harlen@erols.com) *****After despairing of ever finding
out about "my" Tolliver (my older relatives know nothing but her name),
I feel like I have hit the mother lode! I am connected to the Taliaferros
thru my gr grandmother Malinda Tolliver. According to' Marriage Records
of Wyoming County, (W)VA, 1854-1880': On September 9, 1880, Wm. A.
Wood, 21, born Mercer Co., [married] Malinda Tolliver, born Wyoming Co.
Married by Wm. G. Phillips.i According to the same source, 21 years
earlier, in 1859, "Jessie Toliver, 22, single, born Ash Co., NC, son of
Hyrum and Nancy, married Harriet Ann Terry, 25, single, born Floyd Co.
VA, daughter of John and Clarisse." It is unclear whether Malinda's
father was this Jesse, the son of Hyrum and Harriet, or, according to another
source citing the book by Nell Sherman, another Jesse, the son of Allen
Toliver and Susan Mash. At any rate, Malinda married William
Wood (b. 1860) in Wyoming County. They had Jessie, Elizabeth, and Frederick
Douglas Wood, my grandfather, b. 1887 in Wyoming County. Frederick
m. Effie May Blevins (b. 1895) and they had seven children including Robert
Lloyd Wood, my father (b. 1914). He was born in Slab Fork, Wyoming
Co. I was born near Princeton, in Mercer County WV. My father
and the rest of my immediate family moved to Kentucky and then Ohio,
and I now live in Chantilly Virginia (just a couple of miles from Joyce!).
I hope to clarify whether Malinda's father Jesse was the son of Allen Toliver
and Susan Mash, or of Hyrum/Hiram Tolliver and Nancy somebody--or possibly
someone else altogether. I can then try to trace back from
there. A novice, I am also intrigued by the fact that Booker T. Washington's
middle name was Taliaferro, and look forward to finding out what
folks have learned about that connection.

JOAN MIHAY (jmihay@slonet.org)
*****This came from the same file of VA bible from which I sent you
a week or so ago. This Nicholas is "of Totterdown Hill" I believe it is
almost identical to the diary entries in your #4 newsletter. However, there
are a few differences - one spells wife Blasingame as Francis, the other
as Frances - could be either- The bible does show the missing 6th son of
Nicholas and Ann as William Thornton Taliaferro b. 1/16/1795.
The bible also adds some additional data such as death and baptism dates, and attendees that were not in issue # 4. However, I saw no conflicting dates. The bible has an obvious typo for death date of Ann Patterson Taliaferro - the L1 could be interpreted as January or November.
The child of Robert Reynolds and Mary Taliaferro is shown as Thornton
Elizabeth Hay Reynolds which could be a typo or a feminization of Thornton.
There may be other differences.

"The Taliaferro lineage in the Fort Thomas (note: Ky.) community traces
back to 1824 when William Taliaferro married his first cousin, Alice Berry,
and acquired 125 to 150 acres from his father-in-law, Washington Berry...Berry
was the founder of Jamestown (Ky.) (now lower Dayton) and later served
as first Chairman or Judge of the Campbell County Court.
The Berry family had migrated down the Ohio River and had made plans to meet their Taylor family relatives from Newport where a red flag had been placed at the river settlement in Newport. By some miscalculation, the Berry party thought that they had missed the signal flag. They landed in an area between Bellevue and Jamestown. So it was by accident that Washington Berry laid claim to the river bottoms and to the nearby hills of Mount Pleasant.
The Virginia ancestors of the Taliaferro line sold the family plantation in Virginia in 1812. They too came down the Ohio on flatboats with an entourage of family, servants and slaves.
William Richard Taylor Taliaferro, born in 1803, was a hardy dirt farmer who, with the help of 60 slaves, built the first home in Mount Pleasant in 1830. The timber used in the construction was from the virgin trees felled on the building site. This home was so sturdy that it still stands at 1830 N. Fort Thomas Ave. This home also served as the Methodist Church on Sundays where services were held when a circuit minister was available.
Life in Mount Pleasant was not easy for farmer William and his family. It was a struggle to stock the cellar and the pantry with staples to feed a large family. When he died in 1893, William had lost two wives and had married a third. Fourteen children resulted from these three marriages. His son, Edward Kavanaugh Taliaferro, whose mother was William's third wife, Cassandra, married Florence Hills in 1900 and that marriage was blessed with the birth of Ernestine who still lives in the Taliaferro homestead at 1830 N. Fort Thomas Ave...
Another interesting member of the Taliaferro family who was recorded in history was John Taliaferro Thompson. This descendent of the Taliaferro branch from Virginia was born in the Knights of Columbus building in Newport in 1860. His claim to fame is that he was the inventor of the machine gun which bears his name."
No Ernestine Taliaferro in phone books now. I have info. on the Taylor
& Southgate families.

WELDON ROGERS (hcfr@mindspring.com) sends some advice to help us all as we grope toward a better understanding and knowledge of our ancestors. To quote a phrase from a noted genealogist: "(The) purpose is to clean up the errors in the lineage with better and more thorough research techniques, and to dispense the corrected genealogy and family history as a debt of gratitude to all those previous writers who blazed this trail. Thank goodness they cared enough to leave us their legacy."
1. Nothing is certain about anything unless confirmed by primary evidence: legal or ecclesiastical documents, qualified family Bibles, all of which must be cited by location and page number.
2. Secondary sources, ie. Quarterlys, somebody's guess, speculation, thoughts, etc., anything but the above, create confusion, frustration and problems that takes generations to correct.
Only those articles in which all statements are confirmed by cited references should even be considered.
***** Weldon also passes along the following information.
Katherine DEBNAM Grymes was the widow of William DEBNAM who died in 1657. He owned a 1500 acre estate in Glouceser County. See Henry G Taliaferro's article on the wife of Cadwallader Jones. In addition to the three daughters he left William Debnam Jr. who stayed in Gloucester. [Ed. Note: For a fuller discussion of the identity of Katherine Taliaferro, please refer to TALIAFERRO TIMES, 19 Feb 97.]
Jane Bankhead married Robert Taliaferro (ca 1725-1791) son of John Taliaferro of the Mount (ca 1690-1763) and Agatha Hay (ca 1699- ). Robert bought the only Taliaferro land we know about located on the Mattapony in St. Margaret's Parish. He bought the land, where Blenheim is now located, in 1752 from Roger Madison with his father, John of the Mount as his security (Roger had to sue for his money and they paid off, John being a Justice of the Court at the time). Nearby was the home of James Bankhead, Jane's father. Robert Taliaferro of Blenheim was Co-executor of his father's will. He served on the Caroline Court from 1755 to its dissolution.
The Caroline County land tax list in 1787 shows him the largest Taliaferro landowner in the county with over 2,000 acres in St. Margarets and 600 acres in St. Marys. His son Robert Jr (who married Ann Hubbard Taylor) was installed on the St. Mary's property. The tax lists thru 1814 and the various announcements and auctions appearing in the Fredericksburg newspapers show how his property was distributed on his death. Jane Bankhead Taliaferro died in Washington DC at the home of a granddaughter at the age of 95 in 1832. She survived all of her 9/10 children. Her executor and grandson, Benjamin F. Taliaferro, attorney who died in 1855, settled her personal property estate, found among the loose papers of Caroline County at the VA State Library, and listed all her children and grandchildren.
Robert's children intermarried with the children of Francis of Epsom and Elizabeth Hay, uniting and complicating the families of the brothers Francis and John Taliaferro and the sisters Agatha and Elizabeth Hay.
Robert Taliaferro of Blenheim is not to be confused with Robert Taliaferro III (1688-1768) who married (1) ca 1710 to Margaret French and (2) ca 1726 to Ann Pitman.
